What is Maya?

• Maya is that which can be measured. The whole world can be measured, that is why it is Maya. All the five elements - Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether - can be measured.

• Measurement is always relative and not absolute. Example: If something weighs 6 kilos on the earth, it then weighs only 1 kilo on the moon. The light of the star you see today is not really today's light. It has taken at least 4 years for the light to reach you! Both size and weight change in air, water and earth. So "measure" is illusive and not dependable. Your bones, skin, body, environment and five elements can be measured; you can put a value to it. So, the whole world is Maya!

• All measures are relative understanding. Einstein's theory of relativity correlates with the Advaita (non-dual) philosophy.

• Maya is getting caught up in the event, personality, object. Knowledge, love, Brahman is seeing beyond the event, personality, or object.

• Maya is not being aware of the three aspects of consciousness. Three aspects of consciousness : "is-ness" - that it is; knowingness/expression - it knows and expresses; and love - it is loving.

• The projection of the nature of self which is "always", on the temporal which can never be "always", is called Maya.

• But what is not Maya? All that cannot be measured is not Maya. You cannot say 1 ounce of love, 2 ounces of peace, 5 kilos of happiness, Can YOU be measured? It is not possible. Your body has weight, but not YOU. Truth cannot be measured, Ananda (joy) cannot be measured, beauty cannot be measured. All these are part of Consciousness or Easwara (Divine) and are called MAYI.

Purushottam Mass

Adhik Maas means Extra Month is also known as Purushottam Mass, Mal Maas, Malimmacha. We have two calendars in India. One is Lunar also known as Hindu calander and the other is Solar. A lunar month is around 29.5 days long and a solar month, that is the usual calendar, is 30 to 31 days. The lunar year consists of 354 solar days and solar year consists of 365 days. There is a difference of 11 days between the lunar and solar year. As this gap increases each year, it approximates in three years to one month. To compensate and get the two calendars similar an extra month is added. This is the thirteenth month of the lunar calendar.

Vasishta Siddhanta, a treatise of Sage Vasishta, says that the Adhika Maas occurs after every 32 months, 16 days and 8 Ghadis. A Ghadi is 24 minutes.

The Adhik Maas is added when the Amvasya and the Surya Sankranti fall on same day. For example, on 14th April 2010, it is Amvasya and also the Sun is changing its sign from Pisces to Aries. So, there is an Adhik Maas this year. This is the ongoing month of Vaishakh which comes after the month of Chaitra. Vaishakh began on 30th of March 2010 and will end on 30th of May 2010 lasting for two months instead of the usual one month.

Just as there is the lunar year with the extra month (Adhik Maas), so is there a lunar year with a diminished or reduced month (Kshaya Maas), with only eleven months in the year. The lunar year comprising of eleven months only is very rare indeed. But the extra month or Adhik Maas comes every third year. Adhik Maas adopts the name of the month that follows Adhik Maas. Whenever Sankranti does not fall within one month then Adhik Maas occurs. When there are two Sankrantis within one month then it becomes the lunar year with one reduced month.

This year Adhika Maas is from March 30, 2010 to April 28, 2010 as per North Indian Calendar, for whom the new month starts on the full moon. In Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the Adika Maas is from April 15, 2010 to May 14, 2010, as the new month for these people start from the new moon. This Adhik Maas is dedicated to Lord Krishna and as Vaishak is auspicious to Vishnu this makes the Adhik Maas in 2010 doubly auspicious.

According to history, Purushottam Mass is used to call Mal Mass. Now lets see why it used to call Mal Mass and how did it name Purushottam Mass.

Mal Mass is the extra month and every month has its adhipati dev but this Mal mass didn’t have any adhipati dev so nobody used to like this month. Everybody used to talk bad about this month. Nobody used to initiate any good work during this month. Even nobody feels like offering pooja in this month. Everybody used to hat this month. So Mal mass was very upset. That is why it used to call Mal Mass.

One day Mal Mass was frustrated and very sad went to God Vishnu and started praying that please do something that people stop hating me, like other months I should also have date, adhipati dev. people call me Mal Mass because I don’t have any name, so please give me a good name. God Vishnu then told to Mal Mass about God Krishna and took him to God Krishna. God Vishnu introduce Mal Mass to God Krishna and narrated his story. Then God Krishna said, “I can’t say No who has surrender to God Vishnu”. Purushottam is one my name, I gave it to you with all the good quality I have. Since that Mal Mass called Purushottam Mass. Krishna said that now onwards Purushottam Mass will be the month offering pooja, japa, to do lot of service. Its been said that if they will do worship in this month they will be benefited a thousand times more. Its been said if you offer pooja and sadhana for entire month you will be get rid of all pains and one can go to heaven. This is how Lord Krishna made Mal Mass to holy Purushottam Mass.

Story time - God, King and Commitment

There was a King. He has taken one commitment that any bhikshuk (needy one) will come to him and ask anything he will give it. King has decided one day in a week so that particular day all needy ones would come to him and ask whatever they want and King would satisfy them. One beautiful day God thought of testing the King. And that particular day God came in the form of Bhikshuk, He was standing last in the queue. One by one every bhikshuk used to go to King and ask for land, money, food, etc… and King would satisfy them. Now it’s the turn of God. Now

King - Tell me what do you want???

God (in the form of bhikshuk) - I need something to eat.

King ordered delicious food for that bhikshuk(God).

Bhikshuk(God) – No, I don’t want this kind of food.

King – Then what kind of food do you want???

Bhikshuk (God) – I want non-vegetarian food.

King ordered good quality meat for Bhikshuk.

Bhikshuk (God) – No, I don’t want this kind of meat.

King – Then what kind of meat do you want???

Bhikshuk (God) – I want the meat of human body.

King got shoked…

King – how can I get meat of human body???

Bhikshuk (God) – You are also a human, don’t you???

King was utterly in dilemma. Now he understood that Bhikshuk (God) wants to have meat of his own body. And Kind has to stick to his commitment to satisfy bhikshuk, but King has full faith on God that my God will not allow this to happen. Let me do my karma and God will definitely save me.

King – ok take it. If your hunger will be satisfied by the meat of my body then take it.

Bhikshuk (God) – No, I don’t want to eat like this.

King – Then how???

Bhikshuk (God) – your body should be chopped with the huge cutter into the two pieces of the same size. Then one piece will be taken by your wife and the other by your son. They have to make your meat eatable and then give it to me. And then I will eat that and satisfy my hunger.

King’s wife and son has full faith on King’s faith on God and also they respect King’s commitment. So they also agreed to do so.

After listening to this he realized that only God can test me such a way. Suddenly he became so happy that God has come to test me and he offered his body in a way that Bhikshuk (God) wanted.

God was very happy with his commitment and before the huge cutter chop King’s body, God came in his own form. God gave many blessings to the King and his family and disappear.

I like this story so much that I decided to put this on my blog. What I learnt from this story is When you are in the path of spirituality, God will definitely test you to grow stronger in this path. Parents want their children to be the best. In the same way God wants us to be the best. So whenever the tough time comes feel that God is testing me and feel happy. Have you seen that whenever we are sad, we are more with the divine and when we are happy, we are more stuck in the outer world. Whenever we are going through tough time or whenever we are sad, we are with our own self and we get time to do introspection and whenever we are happy, we are more with material world. So feel the presence of divine in the both situations and get ready for the new challenges.

Bhakti Concert...

Last week I went to Bombay for attending a Concert. Its called Bhakti Concert. I was one of the luckiest one to attend the concert because this was the first ever Bhakti Concert from WAYE (World Alliance For Youth Empowerment). WAYE is the Youth Wing of Art of Living. I loved the theme of the concert and I enjoyed the concert thoroughly. There are many more concerts coming up soon…

Bhakti concert is one of the many programs organized by WAYE (World Alliance For Youth Empowerment). Its really a beautiful concept. Bhakti Concert is the blend of Gan, Gyan and Dhyan.

Gan (Sing songs) – In this concert talented singers who are YES!+ graduates and some are YES!+ facilitator too sing love songs (both hindi and English). Love songs which we can dedicate to the divine. If you see the lyrics of any nice love song, it might as well a devotee singing to God.

Gyan (Knowledge) – There are four ways of reaching to the ultimate – Hatha Yoga, Karm Yoga, Gyan Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. Its been said that Bhakti Yoga is one of the easiest way of reaching to the Ultimate. There are beautiful stories from bhagvatam, puranas and ancient scriptures which bring up quality of devotion (bhakti).

Dhyan (Meditation) – A small beautiful mediation adds the different flavor in Bhakti concert. Meditation erases the impressions and improves the expression.

Whatever money generates from this event will go to the funds of the Youth Ashram which is coming up soon near Bombay, which is again a fantastic concept from WAYE.

Swarnim Gujarat...

                                      Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat…

This 1st May 2010 Gujarat completed its 50 years of establishment.

On 1st May 1960 Gujarat was established. Now let us look into how Gujarat Established…

After Indian independence and the partition of India in 1947, the new Indian government grouped the former princely states of Gujarat into three larger units; Saurashtra, Kutch and Bombay state. In 1956, Bombay state was enlarged to include Kutch, Saurashtra, and parts of Hyderabad state and Madhya Pradesh in central India. The new state had a mostly Gujarati-speaking north and a Marathi-speaking south. Agitation by both Gujarati and Marathi nationalists for their own states led to the split of Bombay state on linguistic lines; on 1 May 1960, it became the new states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. The first capital of Gujarat was Ahmedabad; the capital was moved to Gandhinagar in 1970.

A little bit about Gujarat...

Modern-day Gujarat is derived from Gurjaratra that is the land protected or ruled by the Gurjars, or from Gurjar-rashtra, the Gujjar nation.

Historically, the present-day state of Gujarat has been one of the main centers of the Indus Valley Civilization. It contains major ancient metropolitan cities from the Indus Valley such as Lothal, Dholavira, and Gola Dhoro. The ancient city of Lothal is the site of the India's first port. Also, Dholavira, the ancient city, is one of the largest and most prominent archaeological sites in India, belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization. The most recent discovery was Gola Dhoro.

The ancient history of Gujarat was enriched by their commercial activities. There is a clear historical evidence of trade and commerce ties with Sumer in the Persian Gulf during the time period of 1000 to 750 BC.

Leaders like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Morarji Desai, K.M. Munshi, Narhari Parikh, Mahadev Desai, Mohanlal Pandya, Bhulabhai Desai and Ravi Shankar Vyas all hailed from Gujarat.

The world's largest shipbreaking yard is in Gujarat near Bhavnagar at Alang.

Reliance Petroleum Limited, one of the group companies of Reliance Industries Limited founded by Dhirubhai Ambani, operates the oil refinery at Jamnagar, which is the world's largest grass-roots refineries. The company has also planned another SEZ (special economic zone) in Jamnagar.

Gujarat ranks first nationwide in gas-based thermal electricity generation with national market share of over 8% and second nationwide in nuclear electricity generation with national market share of over 1%.

Gujarat's major cities include Ahmedabad, Surat, Baroda(Vadodara) and Rajkot. The fourth fastest growing city in the world, Surat dates back to the years of Mahabharat i.e. about year 3,000 B.C. Legend has it that Krishna himself stopped in his way to Dwarka with his cows, their frontprints being visible even today at a place popularly called “Gai Pagli”. As of 2007, Surat and its metropolitan area have a population of roughly 4 million. The city is known worldwide for its unique Surti cuisine, an inspiration for many of India’s dishes. Among the most popular tourist objectives in Surat, don’t miss your chance to visit the Water Fun Park, the Dutch Garden or the Vandasa Natural Park.

Gujarat government has a front runner in development of solar energy in the state. It has alloted 716 MW of Solar Power capacity to 34 national and international solar project developers in 2009; against the planned 500 MW capacity under its Solar Power Policy.[17] This is expected to bring in investments of INR 12000 crore and generate employmentment for 5,000 people.
